Paul (Apprentice, long term)
In 2010 Paul relocated to apprentice with Martinus from jewelry studies at the Scuolo Metallo Nobile in Florence, Italy. In a dynamic, mutually beneficial setting, Paul is learning at the work bench while functioning as a vital part of the production team to develop inventory for the studio. Paul’s goals and commitment over an intensive, two year studio program are toward excellence while he is improving his techniques and efficiencies for his career.
Paul has created 18k white gold earrings with stepped bezel settings and sensuous "Merlot" colored garnets at the centre.
Martinus "Barnacles" design has 24 fine diamonds that Paul has set in 18k white gold after 1.5 years of training. Setting stones requires patience and this project took Paul almost three days to complete. The challenge is to have the stones exactly flush on the surface without tilting any of the stones in their bezels. The textured 18k yellow gold rails are engraved.
Two cognac-colored diamonds are placed in bezel settings at the centre of polished convex, hollow circular forms. Paul has mastered the techniques and symmetry required and is ready to apply these skills to several Martinus designs.
Cheerful Day
Paul has set a carved moonstone into a textured 18k white gold bezel setting.
The technical challenge in this ring is to have the 18k white gold and 18k yellow gold layers fit perfectly. The drilled points for the stone settings also serve as the entry point for the solder.
Paul has placed six fine diamonds in gypsy settings along an 18k peach gold band. The substantial, softly brushed 18k white gold band to the right has ten fine diamonds in gypsy settings. The challenge in these rings is perfect symmetry and technical precision.in leveling the stone with the surface of the ring shank.
In this ring a finely cut Prehnite Cabochon is skillfully placed in a tapered bezel setting. A double 18k white gold ring shank opens up along each side of this impressive stone. Precision and symmetry are essential.
Paul has designed a pendant entitled "Forget Me Knot". A fine white diamond is gypsy set at the centre of a 18k white gold hammer surface. The chain runs through a bale placed at the back of this piece.
Paul has created the original casting model and assembled the cast gold components. The intricate leaves and silver frames are cast in Vancouver. The challenge here is fitting the leaves precisely to the frame prior to soldering. Paul has created a textured surface on 18k yellow gold frames and placed a white freshwater pearl.
This "Little Wisdoms" coin-like centerpiece has been cast in 18k yellow gold. Paul has created a special, stepped 18k white gold bale to accommodate the diameter of the chain, a frame and domed backing.
Paul has created the casting model for this original Martinus composition. He has also cleaned up and assembled the cast gold & silver components. The intricate leaves and silver frames are cast in Vancouver. The challenge in these pieces is fitting the leaves precisely to the frame prior to soldering.
Paul has carefully placed six champagne colored diamonds in gypsy settings along a textured, 18k peach gold band. The 18k white gold ring has ten fine diamonds gypsy set along a softly finished band. These are challenging compositions that demands technical excellence.
A one-of-a-kind Martinus design. This 18k yellow gold clasp is adorned with nine, fine diamonds that have been gypsy set into a rich hammer textured surface. The entire horizontal tongue clasp mechanism, with dual flat catches at either side of the clasp, has been fabricated in the Studio.
Customers brought in a large diamond and for sentimental reasons, Paul has sandwiched a 22k yellow gold wedding band between two bands in 18k white gold. With support, the actual fitting of Paul's tapered bezel setting was completed.
Here for the Martinus design "Bellvue Square", Paul has assembled three bands for the 18k white gold ring shank and hand fabricated the prong setting for the centre "Princess" cut diamond.
This is a special, custom piece featuring a client's yellow sapphire. Paul has skillfully created a sophisticated "trumpet" shaped setting for this stone supported by a triple ring shank in 18k yellow gold.
Paul's Testimonial:
"Martin is an open minded instructor who is always encouraging, helpful and incredibly patient. The relaxed studio atmosphere makes a comfortable working environment and it has been a true pleasure apprenticing with Martin.
My working experience with Martinus has been an opportunity to fine tune my skills as a metalsmith, skills I have been working to develop for some time. His focus on precision and detail has assisted in bringing my own work to new levels. Along with special attention to design techniques and tips in production, I am now able to create more complicated pieces in a timely manner which is important in being a successful goldsmith."
